The 31st season of Avedis opens on January 17 with our annual Bach and
Friends concert, including two brilliant works by Vivaldi and Telemann,
highlighting the bassoon. The Concerto for piano and two flutes is a setting by
the composer of the familiar Brandenburg Concerto No. 4. Four vocal soloists are
featured in Bach’s magnificent Cantata 94 which concludes the program.

On February 14 we welcome back internationally renowned pianist,
Jon Nakamatsu, joining the Stanford Woodwind Quintet in Theodor Blumer’s
romantic Sextet. The program opens with Beethoven’s brilliant trio for piano,
flute and bassoon, contrasted by charming French sextets by Roussel and
d’Indy and American composer Robert Muczynski’s Quintet for Winds.

AND A WEST COAST PREMIERE

The March 13 concert features the West Coast premiere of Aaron Jay Kernis’
Lullaby for flute and guitar. The program opens with Serenata Concertante
by Antonio Diabelli, a contemporary of Beethoven, followed by the French
impressionistic trio of Roussel, Golijov’s Fish Tale, a beautiful water color for flute
and guitar, and Gary Schocker’s brilliant Garden Music for flute, guitar and cello.

A TRIBUTE TO ANN FRANK

The May 1 concert honors two Dutch holocaust victims in beautiful and deeply
touching music. I Remember is a haunting distillation of Anne Frank’s inner life as shown
through her diary and written by American film music writer Michael Cohen.
Leo Smit, having studied in Paris, brings us warmth, energy and melodious creativity in the
French style with his Quintet. The program opens with a classical quintet by Antonio Salieri
(contemporary of Mozart) and includes Arnold Bax’s impressionistic Elegiac Trio.
